Clansthal picnic spot at the beach entrance....could be cleaner, but nice view.

Rocky Bay picnic area, brilliant spot, old, but clean ablutions, parking right at the beach and the intoxicating smell of the locals cooking biryanis and curry on the beach.....looks like a good fishing spot too.

Sugar Baron Restaurant in Rocky Bay....informal atmosphere and a nice varied menu.....where else can you get a 200g fillet or a 300g rump for a 100 ronts Service was rather slow, but staff super friendly....worth a whirl if you are in the area.Click image for larger version.

Exploring the area around the farm where SWAMBO Lite and grandsons live.....Verkykerskop, Memel, Warden, Harrismith and Vrede.....even In winter there is a stark beauty to the Free State that is very bewitching.....not camping pics, I know, but simply have to share the photos' with like minded people.

Took the road less travelled from Harrismith to Durban using back roads and avoiding highways....beautiful scenery, but sad to see historic towns like Colenso becoming faded, tumbledown dumps.....we followed the signs to the historic gun site, but all that was to be seen was a derelict coal power station.....the rest of the scenery was great though.Click image for larger version.

Indeed, all adventures have compromises. Difficult to take that level of comfort of the splash where the trailer and RTT can go.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

Been hearing about Killarney 4x4 on the forum for ages, so SWAMBO and I decided to check it out yesterday.....what a place, had to remember that discretion is the better part of valor, as the Pathfinder is a daily drive....would really like something special to play with at the facility.....mmmmm......a nice lifted Ruby with 33's would do me just fine. Camping and ablution facilities are really nice.....I can see a weekend of camping there coming up in the near future.....

Had a chilled one night getaway at River Goose Cottage in Howick (Airb&b). Wonderfully attentive and gracious host, Angela, in a tastefully furnished and cosy cottage. Incredibly peaceful with a huge array of bird life, it was a very relaxing weekend. Unexpected breakfast on Sunday morning consisting of freshly squeezed orange juice and scrumptious wet muesli, which was an unexpected treat. The welcoming party.....the chocolate Labrador, Milo, popped by often check if all was in order.Click image for larger version.

Default Searching For Campsites,Backpackers,Places Of Interest, Mountain Passes And Eateries

This past Sunday was spent cycling around and exploring Midmar Dam. Very picturesque and masses of space allow for camping in popular areas, as well as many places where one could camp in solitude. Whilst the ablutions were probably built in the same year as the Dam was completed, namely 1964, the facilities were cleaned and well maintained. This is definitely on our bucket list for a camping Click image for larger version.

Thumbs up Re: Searching For Campsites,Backpackers,Places Of Interest, Mountain Passes And Eater

Thanks for the images and descriptions
We have been to many of the places you have visited but not always the particular places you stayed at.
Amazing what you miss when you concentrating on one particular place you are going to.

You still have many KZN rural [back roads] roads to travel -- a whole new World awaits
The Tugela Valley in places is just like the Zambezi valley -- MANY unknown and untraveled roads there
IF you like adventure and rural darkest Africa it is here on your [figurative] doorstep
See the photos by Riaan van Wyk

You may have to go some way to find -- comfortable accommodation though

Thank you for the kind words....no worries about comfortable accommodation as we have just got our off road trailer....incidentally, I will be seeing Riaan at the GTG at False Bay next weekend. Off to Castleburn for wedding anniversary this weekend.
