    Default D3 Lexus V8 conversion

Just popped into Roverland to check on the progress of the fitting of my winch to my D2... also owed Dan an apology... I told the workshop manager this time last year he wouldn't be able to get the Lexus conversion sorted in a D3.

Well, Dan let me drive his vehicle. What can I say? I'm impressed. The conversion looks incredibly neat, there is oodles of power and the drive is very smooth. Dan kept the Lexus box. He has a manual switch fitted for the air suspension. Whilst only rear wheel drive for the moment, he says it is possible to fit the D3 transfer box.

I queried the option of merely going D3 V8 with the std Jag engine. He agreed that they were strong but they also occasionally have issues with valves and timing chains.

Apparently the Lexus conversion into the D2 is very common in Jhb now... might be an option for me when my Td5 eventually retires.

Is this conversion a practical alternative? Well it seems to be cheaper than replacing the Tdv6 with same. This conversion is not perfect but it is usable and does, at the end of the day, keep another D3 on the road.

    Would I buy one?

    Probably.

    Well done, Dan.

I'll say well done when he gets 4x4 working.

As for putting a Lexus in your D2 instead of the TD5: do you want to be WHIPPED?

If they can get the ABS, ESP, TC, Terrain Response and all related systems to work and it still works out cheaper than a TDV6 fix, I'll be impressed.

I spoke to some guys yesterday and the D3/Lexus topic up.

Apparently a guy in Centurion has managed to mate the Lexus to the D3 gearbox, thus just the engine is non standard.

Standard diagnostics can be done on the car, LR for the body and just the engine on the Toyota software.

Still not my first choice but it might open some options.

Haha, I love the "purists" for their way of doing things. It really is important to preserve some things for posterity, but its not my place to judge or say its better or worse than my opinion.

    Here is what I think.
Land Rover are fantastic vehicles and I love them more than I can explain. Ask Swambo, I have never been able to explain it to her.
But, having said that, what is wrong with a conversion if it works? Which motor is truly an original Land Rover Motor? Is it the Buick, Rover, Jaguar, Ford or the Peugeot? I know I missed some somewhere?

Land Rover is about the lifestyle. Driving your vehicle with a mile wide smile and all of the little quirks that these vehicles come with.
A conversion that gets your vehicle moving again is better than having a vehicle waste away in a garage somewhere...
So, if a lexus can be made to work without sacrificing the benefits of the magic that makes the D3 so great to drive then more strength to the man who does it.

    just my 2cw.
I know I am not expressing a popular opinion. haha.

    100% buddy

Land Rover has stolen engines since the first Series 1 used a Rover car engine.

Only the TD5 was a completely LR engine.

The new Ingenium engine is the first JLR engine since then.

    I love Jelo's comments. +1.

D3 - can't really be purist about it.

I AM looking for a 1958 Shorty........Let the purist in me see the light.

But thats a D3 conversion that may be worth considering

ANOTHER CONVERSION [ come in Jelo] I'm drooling about is Alfa BRERA with the Cadillac twin turbo V6...... PLUS a lot of trickery.

    Default D3 Lexus V8 conversion

I guess that for those of us that are waiting with bated breath for our D3's to drop their guts, this conversion may still be worth considering.....been without mine for almost 2 years now whilst in a dispute with an indie that destroyed the ECU whilst replacing the turbo. The vehicle is almost paid off, but I still would probably not consider the R160k repair should it be required. I love the vehicle, but I guess I am at the point where it has caused me enough misery.....judging by the km, 225k and the year,2006, I seem to be in the clear statistically according The Forum. My point is, that if this conversion does manage to keep a couple more Landies on the road, albeit as "hybrids",then well done to all concerned.

Are all the other LR electrics still working, i.e rock crawl, suspension etc.

Would be interesting to see how it performs off road.

I say not because terrain response interacts with the engine management system. I very much doubt they have the interaction working.

If there are people clever enough to make sense of the systems to produce new maps, surely there must be the same clever people out there to make an after market ecu controller to work?

Sure, possible but not easy. They do not even have it working in 4x4, what is the probability that terrain response is working as it should. A Ford or Jaguar V8 would be a much easier conversion.
