Same here. I think they are due for release in SA in December. I will wait a month or so just to see that are no major gotchas and then pull the trigger on one. The Landcruiser club will be making a group buy so if you 20-30 guys using them all the time, any issues will crop up soon. I believe they will not the coming with street maps ( I hope I am wrong) so will be loading them with the Open streetmaps and Open Topo maps. I do believe those maps are just as good as the Garmin equivalents and for the price (mahala) you cannot beat them

Where would a body look to purchase one of these units? We land in Cape Town in 5 days, and will be in Durban and the Johannesburg area before we need one. Thanks for your advice!

I have just one question about the 276Cx which will make or break the decision to buy or not

Can I upload a "great number of tracklogs" from a gdb file (saved under "active logs") and display all of them without having to manually "enable" each tracklog individually?

This question alone is the reason I never regarded either the Oregon or the Montana as "a GPS", because on them you had to activate each log manually (as I was told by those who knew).

Came with topo light. I loaded open topo and street maps and t4a. Found my sweet spot with those three maps. Running at the same time

I am new to GPS route planning, mapping, etc. To date I use google maps, offline usually, on my phone for city stuff, and just an old paper map or locally acquired stuff for dirt tracks and exploring. Mind you I haven't been on the really off-road trips like many seasoned veterans on this forum.

But we are in the process of planning a 3 month overland trip, and the question of GPS has come up. I plan to go with T4A. But I'm curious, why is this GPS so expensive? Others do not seemed phased by the price, so I'm assuming that there are features found on it that simply aren't available on the much cheaper units.

Please educate me, what does this do that isn't on the smaller/cheaper units? This must be obvious to everyone but me.

    Thanks!

A cheap Nuvi will get you to the destination as well. But the 276Cx has quite a few extra features, which you will probably not need. The main differences are that more map detail is shown on the 276 than on the Nuvis, and you have more control about routing (preplanned routes with via points etc).

Further, the 276C has many other programmable feature such as track recording intervals, trip logs etc. It's big screen is a big plus, and perfect in bright sunlight. But then, you will be able to pick up a second hand old GPSMAP for between R1500 and R2000, when they come up, with basically all the same features as the bigger 276Cx.

With decent navigation skills and paper maps, you will get to your destination as well. You will have to ask yourself whether you need it or whether you want it.
