    Default Restoring my 1971 Pinzgauer 710 M - Questions/Advise, Please

Thought I'd start this thread so long.
Found this last week, just did the deed, going to PMB to pick it up on Thursday:

    1971 Steyr Puch Pingauer 710 M - Meaning the 4x4 Soft Top.

I'll update the thread from time to time with pics, my usual blabber, and of course lots of questions and requests for advise.

Car looks complete on the pics, minimal rust (no surface), it has'nt spent time at the coast. Interior also looks complete.

It has'nt been driven for over a year, so I'll winch it on to a trailer, get it home, flush and refill everything, put new plugs, battery and petrol, light a Camel, stand back 10 metres and ask the mecchie to fire her up

    Some pics:

Some more pics of underbelly. Funny damn car this........!!!

All looks nice enough - some old rubber peeing oil here and there, but that's to be expected I guess.

    Also some interesting reading here:

You see the occasional one here in Namibia. Saw the 6x6 version about 2weeks ago in Windhoek.

Steyr delivered a few of the 6x6 vehicles for evaluation by the SADF /SWATF. I dunno if cost, politics, or capabilities was the reason for them not buyingbthese great offroaders in volumes.

My first 4x4 Outing was in a Puch Haflinger. Much smaller than this, and powered by a 650 BMW boxer engine.

As an aside, Steyr is also responsible for assembly of the Unimog, and Merc Galendewagen...

Smarty, from the little I could gather over the weekend:

2,5 Aircooled VW engine, with same carbs as the Porsche 356.
    5 Speed
Power I think about 66kW, Top speed around 110 km/h
Front and rear lockers, activated by levers on the dash
    4WD on the fly
Chassis is some sort of "tube"" that houses the trannies and diffs........and it has portal axles.
The 710 is the 4 wheeler, the 712 the 6 wheeler
The 710 M is the open top troop carrier, the K is the closed "bak", used for radio and ambulance trucks
All were LHD , I think
Looks like Daimler, VW and Porsche also had a finger in the pie somewhere in developing the Steyr Puch Pinzgauer

Would love to keep it Smarty. Papers will be an issue (Zim registered and LHD), but I'll drive it around with trade plates.
Also paid for it as a non - runner.........but one guy has seen it being driven quite regularly. Owner passed away, and the Spouse just wants it gone.
High Risk, yes. But I cant really lose on it - I think if you sell this off as spares, you can double/triple your outlay.
But ja - hoping for the best. I love the old cars, I am priviledged to have a couple of them and they give me great pleasure.

Petri, volgens my vriend Google is daai n Steyr ontwerpte Aircooled inline 4....
Volkswagen/Porche was almal boxer aircooled engines...

    Sal alles 100% original hou.
Blykbaar klink hy nes 'n 1600 Beetle............

Smarty, not sure. I thought that you can register a pre-1984 LHD, but apparently that should be pre 1965..........but I cant think it can be that old - must be 1984.
Guess you can get "vintage status" if you belong to a club or something, but then you must get your car there on a trailer, etc etc (not sure).

IF this can indeed be registered as a LHD in SA, I'll start the process - got a pal in Harare. But one HELL of a job, I've imported a couple V8 110 Pickups from Bots a couple years back, and it's a major issue. And they were originally "SALLD" VIN numbers, meaning they were imported into RSA first and then to Bots.

In the mean time, I'll just get myself 2 easy fix number plate holders from Midas.............

Flip yes, I see they even call the Gelandewagen in Switzerland the "Steyr G", no mention of Mercedes Benz or Gelandewagen. The Swiss are obviously licenced to build the GW under Steyr's name

The Pinz will be here tonight, it's coming with a rollback.
It has'nt run for over a year.
What do I do before I try to crank it?? Drain all oils, fill up again, fit new plugs, and what else??
    Thanks, appreciated!!

Q20 down the sparkplug hole and turn the engin without the plugs to get the oil to all the places. If the oil presure light on the dash goes off then the new oil is where it should be and the oil film layer is restored and old oil is flushed away. Or something like this!
