Nobody mentioned Nylsvlei. (between Nylstroom/Naboom) Small camp site, no electricity but hot water. I haven't been there for a while but enjoyed the area for hiking, birding & game viewing

    Default Serendipity

Tried Serendipity (near Naboomspruit, 185km from Randburg) over the long weekend (probably wasn't the best time to try it...).

Stayed at the Boskamp. Really nice area with three large campsites. Lots of shade. Two toilets and donkey-powered showers. Power and running water at the sites (power is apparently not reliable though).

There was another group of campers on the one of the other sites and we hardly noticed each other. Right behind campsite 2, just on the other side of a hedge is a chalet, different story here though... Although you can't really see it you can definately hear it if it's occupied by the brandewyn-het-nie-brieke-nie, check-out-my-new-sound-system brigade Had quite a few bikes / quads going past the camp in the mornings and afternoons as well (although they're supposedly not allowed in this area).

Will try it again over a normal weekend as well as some of the other campsites (Bundu and/or Echo camps).

So new bushcamp to add to the list! Buffalo Gorge Wildcamp which is just outside Middleberg. Stayed there over the Easter Weekend. It is on top of the mountain accessed via the 4x4 trail so very secluded, no power, donkey for hot water and very quiet. There were only 4 of us camping for the whole weekend! Absolute bliss and highly recommended. Various activities are also available. See the website.

This weekend going to Danielsrust Game Farm bushcamp near Sterkfontein caves. Sounds good and looks good on their website. Will report back.

Somabula has no heated or cold swimming pool making it not that attractive on hot summer day.

Can anyone please comment on Korkoriba near Britz please. Went through the comments nothing yet commented on this game reserve. Got a family member coming out from UK that we want to take away.

I think Dube Game Lodge is a better option.

Danielsrust Game Farm near Sterkfontein Caves. Brilliant! If you enjoy solitude and no other campers this is for you! No power, gas showers and wide open spaces. You can walk or mountain bike but no self drive in the reserve allowed. They only allow one group to camp at a time so if you are 2 or 20 you will be the only group! They offer horse riding, game viewing on quads etc. See the website.

Thanks but everyone had been to Dube and they wanted to try somewhere else so we tried Korkoriba anyway. +- 39 km on the other side of Brits (bumpy tar road).

A bit commercialised maybe for some with hot indoor pool, warm outdoor pool, cold outdoor pool, all nicely grassed, shop, restaurant, pub (serve nice cocktails) putt putt, game drives, chalets, small kids play area, etc. They have also chosen a lot of smaller 2x shower / 2x toilet ablutions which was ok as it was not busy. We feel in busy season the small ablutions will not cope. You will probably have to walk from one to the next. Sites are partly shaded only and gravel / no grass on most - paper thorns where there was grass. Game viewing by renting golfcart / gameviewer only.

Plus points for us - generally nice & quiet / nice place to chill out, no hooligans, no day visitors, clean & tidy, small but very nice ablutions (but hot water ran out on Sun morn??), campsite prices are reasonable.

We will go back out of season but only generally ok / no wow.

We are bush campers! Put us in the A-D Category and 4x4 terrain is completely acceptable.

Matamba - definitely recommend. Fantastic for walking, cycling, trail running, and seeing the animals so close up is wonderful. Fantastic hosts. Ablutions of different sorts, and the outdoor ones in summer are great. Love this spot.
Somabula is great for a quick weekend getaway. 3 sites only. No electricity, but hot water from gas. Good for short walks, trail running and cycling if you can handle the sand. No 4x4 driving. Buck, giraffe, zebra and other small animals abound. Chalets there too. Quiet.
Bushbaby - awful but ablutions ok. Did not really feel like a bush camp. Cannot have an open fire at your own campsite - well that is what we were told, so had to use communal braai.
Bersig Eco Camp - you wont see it advertised on their site, but ask direct. 3 sites only. Outdoor shower available with communal wash up and bathrooms. No electricity when we were there. You may hear some of the staff enjoying Saturday night in the far distance - its not Kruger.
Bontle @ Marakele - typical Sanparks, a little too many sites for us, but clean and neat and the rhino experiences are tremendous. Not a long stay place.
Mapumgubwe - loved the campsite under the massive wild figs However, the monkeys are a menace and you must not leave ANYTHING out at all! We even packed kitchen into ammos and took with us on game drives. But, the camping was really special.
Kruger bush camps - I have come to the conclusion that Kruger is for out of season ONLY, and NOT over long weekends and school holidays. Unless you go far north. Tzendze and upwards only. Our last experience in a bush camp we suffered from "light poisoning" by LED, rugby mad fans sitting in cars blaring the latest scores, and feeding hyenas over the fence. Its ruined Kruger for me completely.
Barakah near Vredefort dome - clean and decent ablutions. Not sure total number of sites, but if you are going to be disturbed by 4x4 enthusiasts doing the trails you may wish to go elsewhere. We had a surprisingly quiet weekend there over Easter 2 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the peace.
Mokala - stunning! This is a must. You get your own ablutions and a mini-kitchen area. 6-8 camping sites I think, so small and quiet. For me though, being active, I struggled with not being able to go for walks or runs, but would definitely return. Staff very decent.

We've just come back from a weekend at Willemsrus in Dinokeng - lovely. Reasonably sized (24 sites, I think) and well kept. Swimming pool kept the kids busy all weekend, ablutions are awesome. Not really a bush experience for those who prefer to avoid electricity etc but quiet enough. Really relaxed. We'll definitely go back.

Yes was at both places recently. Very quiet, no noise, brilliant bush camps. Also at Thaba Phaswa recently. See if you can book the Drunken Parrot site! Only a toilet on top of the hill nothing else. So black bag hung up on the tree for shower! Nguni cattle will visit you each day. Can mountain bike at all 3 places.
