Default Volunteers needed for Mapping Project

Did you see the Mapa Project? ....the Mapping Africa’s Protected Areas Project.

The Mapa team: (quote from the website) "So the team is March Turnbull (nobody in particular), Johann Groenewald (Director of Tracks4 Africa) and Google (only the biggest name in internet history….). Dream Team."

It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Default Volunteers needed for Mapping Project

My name is March Turnbull and I am part of a project to digitally map all of Africa's major wildlife protected areas – over a thousand wildlife parks and reserves. It is a massive piece of work, the largest ever undertaken for conservation, and we need help!

If this message is posted in the wrong place, is annoying anyone or should be posted somewhere else please let me know….

The project is called MAPA (Mapping Africa's Protected Areas). It is a non-profit exercise based in South Africa but it will work largely outside of that country. It exists entirely to benefit conservation. All data gathered will be made available on a non-profit basis to conservation organisations and to the world via the internet.

We need volunteers to drive our small fleet of GPS-equipped vehicles across Southern and East Africa. We are looking for teams of two people to do a minimum of six week on the road. They will map the parks we task them to visit.

There is no salary, but all vehicle, camping and administration costs will be covered. There is also a modest subsistence allowance.

This is an incredible opportunity and will take drivers to places that they might never otherwise get the chance to go. But it is a serious exercise and it will be hard work. We will be on the road for at least the next two years.

The project leaders are myself and Johann Groenewald of Tracks4Africa, a company which specialises in the creation of maps for GPS equipment.

<o></o>We'd also like to hear from people who like to map in their own vehicles, especially in South Africa where we have 350 protected areas to cover.

Please take a look at http://www.mapaproject.org/?p=41 for more details and contact me if you are interested.

Thanks for reading this, I hope we get a chance to meet.

    March

Johann Marais mentioned this a while back at a club committee meeting. This is a FANTASTIC opportunity, but will require some serious commitment for many of the legs.

    From the Mapa website:
"At the moment we are not recruiting any more volunteer teams until we have funding for Phase 2 – West, Central and North Africa. I am confident that the money will come (all help gratefully received!) and that we will be working throughout 2010."

The first version of the MAPA layer is available as a .kmz file.

    Hi March
I work 6 week rotations in Africa, which would be perfect. The wife and I would love to get involved in a project like this.

I'll send you a PM to see how we can organise a get together.

This seemed to be a project in need indeed. I did travel plenty a time used your latest version to verrify the accurateness of your info and did find a couple of non recorded areas. the question is do we want all the ares accesable to every body or do we want people to visit certain areas. With reference to verry remote areas I traveled in the past i would promote this. refred to saftey.Let me know how can the outdoor bunch in Namibia get involved as to capture gps info or mapping to promote the goal. Greetings

Well looks like I will be doing the Benin-Togo-Ghana leg in Dec10-Jan11.

Waiting for final approval for my leave. Me and SWAMBO are very excited about it. I worked in Ghana for 3 years but never got to see all the places I wanted. Now I get to show SWAMBO around aswell

Is there a specific thread were people load their trip and tracks.
I have an extensive log of places I visited, and
would like to share them with those willing to share there tracks too.
I have a Garmin and log all my offroad trip - would there be interest in sharing Trips,Tracks and Waypoints should others be interested in visiting great secluded places fellow community bloggers have visited.

I guess many of us have a fairly decent log of places visited.

As far as I know, the MAPA data recorded (and photos) are the property of T4A and the sponsors (Google), so it is unlikely this would be presented on an open to all website.

So all of this data will eventually be available on Google Maps?

    Hi Funguye,

Our Tracks4Africa iGO SD Cards were designed for Caska in car navigational unit. These SD Cards can be purchase at Planet Electronics in Silverton in Pretoria or at their Cape Town branch in Strand. You can get in touch with them on 0860 65 64 63.

Which Caska unit do you have?

Please let me know if anything is unclear, thanks.
