Default There in the morning........gone in the afternoon

Was busy putting "boskos" / fruit / lusern out for the animals on Monday afternoon at around 16h00........when Freda shouted from the deck that there was a call on the radio that "Oom Jan's house was on fire".

He is a nearby neighbour in the area.

We rushed out there immediately..........only to find a beautiful double storey thatched house burned to the ground. We did what we can with our limited means of fire / water trailers to calm the blaze and to prevent the fire spreading to nearby lodges / farms. As a water trailer was empty the next one will pull in whilst the other go filling up at the next door farm again.

We did this for 3 x days..........yes 3 x days..........amazing how long sleepers, thatch and wooden tar poles can smoulder and just catch fire again. With no fire station in Vaalwater and with zero response from Nylstroom we had to do it ourselves in a primitive, slow yet affective manner. One tank (1000L) was used just to keep near standing gas bottles cooled down for the time being.

Needless to say they (73-year old pensioners - salt-of the-earth-people, old man standing next to me in the one pic) lost everything. They only have the clothes on their bodies with them - everything else was turned into ashes. Rumours have it they forfeited their insurance as they could no longer afford it with their limited pension - not sure yet.

The immediate community is trying to gather food / clothing / funds to help them back on their feet.......but it is a slow and tedious process to say the least. It's hard to imagine or even think what they actually need on a daily basis if you haven't experienced something like this yourself. Things we take for granted everyday they miss and need big time from day one.

Going there today with more stuff.........clothing........utensils.......beddi ng etc.

Made you sort of humble again.........made you realise what you have and enjoy daily without even thinking about it.........what you can give and where you can lend a hand.........and of course a huge eye opener for how quickly life and your immediate surroundings can change.

Latest forensic report claims a possible electrical short - a sort of generalising comment (I think) if no other traces can be found to blame.

We've housed them temporarily in an adjacent chalet with outside kitchen / bathroom area for the time being.........as they slowly but surely pick up the pieces to carry on again.

    Sad day.
As long as no-one was injured or hurt it's actually ok. With help they will stand up again and continue.

    George,

If you can provide a list of things they might need in the near term I would like to contribute, even if it is just a blanket or a toaster or some socks.

Vra vir Dirk if die thread na die Pub toe geskuif kan word, daar is baie meer mense wat sal kan bydra.

Ek sal ry as dit moet van Gauteng af en die skenkings deurbring.

Devastating, I can only commiserate with these people. They not only lost a home, but memories, keepsakes and things of value only to them.

Fire is one of those things you have very little control over and it moves fast.

My empathy goes out to them.
