Will the memory function work to go back to maintenance stage of charging the deep cycles we keep for emergency house lights?

    Hi Andre,

Yes, the BX-2 will do this. You're welcome to borrow mine for a test, if you wish.

Edit: The latest BX-1(M) models will now also revert to the previous setting automatically in the event of a power failure interruption.

OK, so if my understanding is correct, I can leave this charger on a battery for years without pressing any further buttons and it will keep the battery topped-up and running?
It will automatically adjust the charge, the more the batt needs the more it will supply until the trickle stage is reached, where it will stay, forever?

In a nutshell, yes! This is a great charger! Will be posting a pic as soon as I take a photo.

I have the Benton BX-1 and it saved my one battery which I was ready to throw away because my other chargers could not keep it fully charged. My only problem with the BX1 is that it switches off when a battery is full and that the mode must be set by hand again. Or do I use it wrongly?

It only switches off whenever the AC supply is interrupted or if the DC leads are removed from the battery. The BX-2 does not have this 'feature', it automatically reverts to its former setting in the event of a power failure.

The BX-1 should not switch off when the battery is full, it is designed for maintenance charging.

Seeing that I am on a tight budget, where would I run into hassles when buying the cheaper BX1 as opposed to the more expensive BX2.

    Other than when losing power the bx1 has to be reset etc and the bx2 has a built in memory to erradicate this problem and the bx2 charging at a higher Amperage;

Where (if any) would one be limited by the choice of buying a bx1 instead of a bx2.

The bx 1 is a 5 step charger and the bx2 a 7 step. What are the additional 2 steps and are they REALLY necessary?

You'll be fine with the smaller charger! I'm stuck at home with 'flu at the mo', so can't recall what the extra two steps are in the BX-2 (unless they're counting the power supply capability, which the BX-1 doesn't have. The BX-2 is also capable of charging at 24V, which is most likely not something that you will need.

    FD last question please.
Can I keep the fridge running from the battery while at the same time charging the battery with the BX-1 without messing up something?

You could, but remember the BX-1 has a maximum charge rate of 3.8A. I don't know what the current consumption of your fridge is, although it's unlikely that it will be running continuously.

If the fridge draws more than this and has a fairly heavy duty cycle, you might want to consider the BX-2.

    Its a 40 litre Engel.
Maybe I should get the BX2, just to be on the safe side?
    I hate border cases.

I think you would be very wise to rather consider the BX-2. Max charge rate is 7A, it has a memory function so returns to its previous charge state in the event of a power failure. It also features a built-in power supply.
