Franz, provided it was not damaged through abuse, we would have replaced it within the first year. This is a Repcom Warranty, not from our suppliers.

Speaking of abuse, I "forgot" I had connected a charger to PraDog and simply drove away. I stopped twice to investigate the strange noise I heard before I realised I was dragging the BX-2 charger along with me... Half a block and no further signs of "abuse" . In this case the Quick-Release connector could not release as it was inside the bonnet, the leads were too short for the connector to reach outside the bonnet.

That charger still works to this day.

I've got a 60 ah battery that is flat. More or less, how long will my Benton BX1 take to recharge it? It has been charging for 24 hours.

Don't want to speak out of turn Erik, but a Benton will not resurrect a completely flat battery. If the Benton doesn't see around 7V it will not charge it. If the battery is giving more than 7V then it shouldn't take more than a 6 or so hours.

    I haven't measured the battery.

I see the user manual mentions that it must be >7.5 V. Funny that it shows it is charging.

I suppose I could jump start it and then let the vehicle run a while and then put it on back the charger once the voltage is high enough. Don't know much about this...

Refer the attachment below for charging info.

If the battery is completely dead, you need to give it a bit of a kick by using a normal battery charger for a few minutes, simply to give the battery some residual voltage and then the BX-1 can take over.

    Benton charger failure:
We have had some reports of chargers failing after they have been connected to normal MSW Inverters. The Chargers, as with many other electronic products, are simply not made to run off the square-wave shaped output of a cheap inverter. This is detrimental to operation of any sensitive electronic device and the Benton should not be connected to such an inverter. It is designed for a 220v AC Mains supply only.

Introducing two new items from Benton:

    BX-4 INTELLIGENT MOTOR BIKE CHARGER

The BX-4 is a fully automatic 3-Stage battery charger suitable for ewither 6v or 12v Motor Cycle batteries (Manual select). Battery Capacities from 1.2 to 20Ah are catered for, 6v or 12v.

    The three stages are:

    1. Diagnosis & Bulk Charge:

Here the charger senses the state of charge of the battery and commences the Charge cycle, terminating when the battery voltage reaches 7.2v (for 6v battery) or 14.4v (for 12v battery).

    2. Trickle Charge:
This allows periodic cycling of the Charge to prevent over-charging the batteries. Should the battery voltage fall below 6.5v (6v battery) or 13v (12v battery), then the Charger will switch to Maintenance Mode.

    3. Maintenance Charge:
Should the battery reach the voltage levels in Step 2 above, then Maintenance Charge mode commences, charging the battery at a constant 750mA. Once a fully-charged state is achieved, the Charger reverts to the Trickle Charge rate as in point 2 above.

And for those of you who like brute force...

BENTON BX-5 9-STEP AUTOMATIC INTELLIGENT BATTERY CHARGER

The BX-5 is a fully Automatic Battery Charger capable of charging either 12v or 24v batteries through a 9-step process:

    *1 Diagnosis & Recovery:
The Charger automatically senses they type of battery and whether it is a 12v or 24v one.

    *2 Bulk Charge
    :
80% of the energy is returned in this charging phase through a High-Charge Rate (25A) before reverting to a Medium Charge rate of 12.5A for a 12v Battery. For a 24v battery, half the above charge rates apply.

For a Lead Calcium Battery, the charge rate is maintained at 5A until the voltage reaches 14.7v.

    *3 Absorption:

The Charger now applies a constant low-charge rate of 1.5A to the battery in order to prevent damage to the battery from a constant high rate of charge. During this phase, a charge of close to 100% is obtained. The Charger will switch to the Trickle Charge Mode when it senses that the battery is fully charged.

    *4 Analysis:
After the Absorption phase, the charger senses the battery bconditrion for five minutes. Should the battery voltage fall to below 12.3v for a 12v battery (or 24.6v for a 24v battery), it indicates that the battery is not retyaining its charge and the battery is faulty.

    *5 Trickle Charge
    :
The battery is now fully charged and ready for use. The charger will now supply a charge rate of less than 1A to the battery in order to compensate for any drainage due to tracking devices, alarms etc which may be connected to the battery. Should the battery voltage fall below a pre-determined level, the Charger will switch to Maintenance Mode.

    *6 Maintenance mode:

If the Charger senses that the battery voltage has dropped below 12.8v (for a 12v battery), it commences a pulsed 1.5A charge until the battery reaches 12.8v, when the Maintenance Charge is then stopped.

This cycle of Trickle Charging and Maintenance Charging is continued indefinitely, thus keeping the battery in a full state of readiness while it is not in use.

    *7 Boost:
The purpose of the Boost Mode is to recover a severely discharged battery. The Boost Mode also breaks down Lead Sulphate crystals within the battery cells into active electrolyte again, thereby extending battery life.

The Boost Mode (16v @ 1.5A for 12v battery, 32v @ 1.5A for 24v battery) is active for 4 hours on a 12v battery and 2 hours on a 24v battery. Upon completion of the Boost charge, the BX-5 reverts to normal charging rates.

    *8 Manual Special Maintenance 13.6v:
The BX-5 provides a constant charge rate at 5A and 13.6v, suitable for maintenance of a 12v battery where maximum capacity is required, such as for Golf Carts. The Charger features an automatic overload protection.

    *9 Supply:
The BX-5 will provide a DC supply of 13.6v at up to 5A if required, featuring reverse-polarity protection.

The BX-5 is supplied as above, including Laptop-sized Carry Case.

Easiest way to judge is by the Inverter price. If it cost below R6,000, the chances are it is a MSW (Modified Sine Wave) Inverter. A Full Sine Wave (or Pure Sine Wave) Inverter will not be less than R6,000.

We are in the process of evaluating a DC-DC Charger and I will post more on this once we are satisfied with the performance of the unit. Pricing will be very reasonable.

    Hi Buks,

A "PM" is a "Private Message". By clicking on the user-name (in this case my user-name) you will see a pop-up menu appear, one of the choices being "Send a Private message to <user-name>").

I will now send *you* a Private Message" which you just need to open.
