    what amp solar regulator will i need for a 140w solar panel and charging 2x105ah batteries.

    A 15A solar controller (regulator) will do the trick.

    Default My DIY 12V Powerbox

    So after a weekend camping and having to 'sukkel' with getting (and keeping) all things connected and charged up, I put a few of my too-imaginative brain cells in tandem, and came up with this power box for 12V use:
    Voltage/Ammeter, Hella socket, USB charging pod, 50A fuse and Brad-Harrison connectors to feed power in and out...

    I've used the following 'flow':
    50A B-H plug as input, with 50A fuse on positive line feeding the Volt/Amp display meter on a 50A shunt resistor. Output 'post-fuse' to Hella socket and USB charging pod, and output through a 50A B-H plug.

    Has anyone installed a dual battery system in the engine bay of an Amarok 132kw Double Cab?

    If so, what advice can you give me as my goal is to achieve the following:

    Stage 1:

    Add 2nd battery
    Add DC-DC charger

    Outlets at the back to drive 1 x Engel 40l, 1 x Waeco 40l & maybe a few LEDs.

    Stage 2:
    Add 2 x solar panels

    Although we typically camp where there is electricity, we did play "Camping Roulette" this past weekend in Baviaans, and since we are interested in more such trips IT IS TIME

    Hi Wims, the Amarok loadbay is huge and I would rather place the battery in a box in the loadbin, add a DC-DC charger to the box, which can cater for solar input and fused outputs of your choice. The nature of the DC-DC charger is that you don't need thick cables from the main battery to the loadbin.

    I agree with Subok.

    There are a couple of advantages when putting the battery and DC-DC charger in the back.

    • Less heat and vibration that is bad for any battery
    • Only one 4-6mm cable from the front to the back, less obtrusive and money saver.
    • The battery is still close to your DC-DC charger.
    • but your fridges are very close to your battery, less voltage drop, less money on thick cables.
    • your solar connection can be accessed easily.
    • DC-DC charge can easily be monitored.
    • a removable battery box will allow you to quickly take out the battery when not in use.


    Two solar panels is a great idea, I would go for 80 - 120 watt. (Check what size will fit in)

    a Second battery would also be a good idea or maybe one 200ah.

    Hi All,

    I need some advice regarding the joining/splicing of 16mm wire…..

    I am planning on running a 16mm feed from the vehicle main battery to the back of the Isuzu to connect the caravan for charging purposes. At the same time I would like to add a feed to the loadbin as I often use a battery box when I do not tow the caravan. This in effect means that I will need to split the feed as I would not want two sets of wires from the main battery. The options I have been looking at:

    1. Split at the BH-plug. The problem I have here is that the wires are too thick to crimp two 16mm wires into a grey 50A BH-plug (one fits nicely but not two)
    2. Somewhere close to the back join/splice the feed to the bin by exposing the main feed and then crimping bin wires to main feed using lugs and solder suplimented by multiple layers of crimp to make the join watertight.

    Are there better alternatives as I would not want to do it wrong running a risk of either a short (breaker is installed at both ends of the batteries) or a break in connection??

    Please advise

    Check out National Luna. They have a kit with all you need. You only have to add battery box and battery. I payed 2200.00 for ky kit.

    Hi Erwin,

    I already have the complete battery box. I just want to find a safe method to 'slit' the main feed from the main batery to he loadbin (battery box) and the towbar (caravan), ie. two feeds. The problem I have is the 16mm is very thick and cannot be joined like thinner wires hence my question on what works from the experiened members.

    I saw a video on YouTube a while ago, where they spliced into the main cable and then soldered the living **** out of the join... could work

    How about a small PVC DB with 2 circuit breakers miunteed to the side of the load bin. Then you van switch lines on and off as you like. Black can be connected via a terminal block.

    I'd rather do this below, found the write-up on another forum when I needed to do this.

    You can,
    a. use a sharp knife to strip away about 1 cm of insulation from your existing wires WITHOUT cutting or damaging the metal conductor inside.
    b. Expose about 1 cm of metal conductor at the end of the wire you want to attach.
    c. Then twist the exposed wire you want to attach (b) around the exposed section of wire (a).
    d. Melt solder into the join for a permanent connection.
    e. Bind the whole lot tightly with insulating tape.you should really use shrink-wrap

    I did it this way, this also enabled me to connect canopy lights and 12V Hella Outlet for pumping beds etc from the load bin
