Default Do I need a IDP (International License) to drive in the UK

I'm leaving for London on Thursday.

While i'm there i may drive my brothers vehicles.
Would i need to get an IDP from the AA here in order to do so?
I know he has to add me to his insurance, thats not an issue.
Its not about how fast you are but about how quick you get there...

The AA will tell you yes. I have heard of people producing SA licenses at road checks and getting away with it in the UK, but why take a chance? The last time I hired a car there, that was what they wanted.

You can use your SA drivers license provided your boet adds you to the insurance.

First time I went I got the International one from the AA, but was never asked for it in either France of the UK – this included car hire and road blocks. They asked for my SA licence and accepted that.

Last I went I did not bother with the AA licence and everything went well again, including car rental at Birmingham airport (Europcar).

The international licence is only for countires where they cannot read your local licence.

Not here. We don't have such a thing. The only time you'll be asked for your licence is when hiring the car, or if you commit a traffic offense.

As Johan says, the IDP is essentially just a translation document.

Road block was in France near Le Mans after a MotoGP. They were testing for alcohol as well.

Might be true for UK, but not other places. I had to get a local licence when I arrived in PNG, but fortunately it is just an administrative process and the PNG licence is accepted in Australia.

Back in 2005 when I was still a student in England, I used to hire vehicles using that old Botswana handwritten, stapled photo driver's licence. I never encountered any police or traffic authorities, so I cannot confirm the legality of it. However the rentals companies accepted it, and assured me I was covered by insurance.
