    Default Mana/Hwange Campsites

I received confirmation of my booking requests for Mana Pools and Hwange yesterday, but the campsites listed don't match my request. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth asking to change the booking.

Can anyone comment on these campsites? Advantages, disadvantages, overall impressions? This is for September/October.

Hwange: Requested Main Camp and Sinamatella. Got Mandavu and Jambile.

Mana Pools: Requested Nyamepi. Got Campsite 1.

    Thanks,
    Ali

Ali. At Nyamepi there are camp sites right next to the river, and campsites slightly away from the river - about 50m. There is a cost difference, with those next to the river at a higher price. All the campsites are very nice in my opinion. When the camp site is empty, it is easy to swap sites. You will be there in the peak season so this option may be more difficult.

We also stayed at Mandavu a year or so ago. It was excellent regarding wildlife etc. But if you want all the amenities this could be a problem as the shower water is straight out of the dam and is green etc. So I think it's a hate it or love it kind of place, depending on your mindset and expectations.

You actualy got reservation for Nyamepi campsite. In there, campsites are numbered, you've got campsite no.1. Here is a PDF map of Nyamepi campsites. Your's is westernmost one. It is not considered as riverfront site, so the price calculation is different. if I remembered correctly, it is charged 20 USD per person per night, as opposed to 100 USD per site per night for riverfront campsites. So, it can bi much cheaper if there are only 2 or 3 persons in your party.

Was there in September of 2012. Mandavu is good as others have said. I do not know Nyamepi but I suspect that it will be fine. Robins camp, and Main were both useless. Stay in the picnic areas for better viewings. Don't expect much as far as thei camp sites are concerned.

Thanks all for the replies. Wendel and ortelius - thanks for letting me know that Campsite 1 is Nyamepi before I wrote requesting a change! That would have been a touch embarrassing.

Johann, GKE, and Dogscout - glad to hear you had good experiences at Mandavu. It looks amazing in the photos. Were you lucky enough to have it to yourselves when you were there?

    Hi Swamp Lantern

When we were in Hwange, we had all the campsites to ourselves which was great. We also stayed at Kennedy camp, and the only other people there were the game ranger and his wife.

Same with Mandavu. At Mandavu you can hear the crocodiles snapping at fish under water when sitting under thatch area as shown in previous photos. We were also awakened by a honey badger sniffing our tent.

Anyway the most advanced piece of equipment these game parks have are pulse telephones and large sheets of green paper for bookings, so there can be some confusion along the way...

Main Camp and Sinamatella are rest camps with camping sites. The camps are located on the edge of the park. Main Camp has restaurant, bar and shop, easy access to hotels outside park. Sinamatella has a kiosk.

Mandavu and Jambile are picnic sites at which camping is permitted. These can be more exciting as you are on your own (no other campers) in the middle of the park, and there are rondavel shelters etc. On the other hand no access to rest camp facilities.

Yes, only during they people arrived to view the game, but they are not staying for long, at 17:00 they close the gates and nobody else is allowed there. It was a really nice experience.
