Default We found a message in a bottle !!

My son and I took a walk along the coast today and found a message in a bottle.

    The message reads:

Hello to whoever finds this. I have never done this before so am not sure of the result. Hopefully this bottle remains intact and travels several thousand miles to distant shores.

My name is Darren White. I am the captain of the South African Submarine "SAS CHARLOTTE MAXEKE". We are in transit back to South Africa from exercises in Argentina and Uraguay. This battle was ditched in position 40'00'S 008'55.7W.
My email address is ------------ and ------------.

The blue print of the email address did not last so I do not have a contact for Darren. I'm sure he would like his bottle back! Anyone with contacts in the navy?

Weird thing is that the drop off position is midway between South America and Africa, and the bottle lands up about 30 km from home base (Simonstown). What are the odds

I can only make out a ball point date of something of the 11/2010.

Wow...... the steps "Heineken" Meyer will go to to spy on the Argentina training camp.

Contact the base and ask for Captain Darren White and see if he exists.
    Jeep, there is only one.

Googled Captain Darren White and he does indeed exist. Contact the base, see if he's around. Would be interesting to see what he says.

Wonder if someone else picked it up first and dropped it in the vegetation? Couldn't have floated up there?

What I was even more happy to find, was exactly how high up the bottle had washed up.

I was actually doing a recce on houses that have been illegally built along remote areas of our coastline (with very little reaction form the authorities). These homeowners have become extremely hostile towards divers and fishermen that use our coastline, claiming that they own the land in front of their houses down to an absurdly low "high water" mark.

They have erected fences, signboards, placed huge rocks in traditional parking places, all in an attempt to block access to the sea. I am preparing a document of evidence I will be submitting to the local authorities, who have clearly ignored their duties in terms of the Intergrated Coastal Management Act of 2008.

So this message in the bottle is bigger than Darren imagined, because it clearly shows a high water mark much higher than the edge of the vegetation.

I'm going to be the pessimist here....sorry...

Judging by the condition of the cork, I think it's a hoax. Two years in salt water should have eroded most of the cork, I think.

The coordinates are in mid-Atlantic too, which would probably mean the bottle would have been caught in the Benguela current and gone up the west coast, hundreds of miles off shore.

Lastly, the SAS Charlotte Maxeke is a submarine. Unless she was running on the surface, or fired the bottle out of a torpedo tube, I think this is strike three...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAS_Cha...eke_%28S102%29

The one thing I did find while Googling "commander of SAS charlotte maxeke in 2010" was the following article which shows OC Darren White giving some pommie admiral a tour of the Charlotte...

    http://www.navy.mil.za/archive/1103/...it/article.htm

Another article I found showed the Charlotte in exercises with Argentina from 1 November 2010, and that she would be returning from sea to Mar Del Plata (Argentina) on the 4th November. It doesn't state when she left Mar Del Plata to come home.

    http://www.navy.mil.za/archive/1010/...no/article.htm

The only thing that will convince me that it's genuine is confirmation from the boat skipper himself...

The cork is fairly weathered relative to the piece in the bottle. Also, I don't recognise the (partial) brand on the cork as one of the local wine estates.

This thought also crossed my mind, but why chose a naval submarine (and the Captain nogal) and place the bottle in such a remote area? It has two contact emails (but the blue has faded beyond readability) and his force number, so he appears to want to be contacted about this bottle.

It sure would be unbelievable if this were all true. Time will tell.

Heinz, I placed a link to this on the Military Academy Facebook page. Maybe someone there may know how to get in contact.

When we did our first big trip for 7 month in 2009,
we threw a lot of bottles with prepared cards
into every water we could find,
    from the fountain of Zambezi
    (OK a few kms behind)
up to Rovuma River, down lake Malawi...

All together it was 30 bottles.

Only one arrived, but we were very happy to get her.

Tho bottle was landing only 30 kms from the place we threw it,
    but almost a year later.

Im sure you will find out what happened!
