I bought the filters at Goldwagen. They are genuine parts and even come in the genuine VW box as well.

    Marius,
I don't quite get the incorrect markings thing.
Give us another diagram, showing how the filter connections should be done, and how they were done.

The diagrams I posted is how it should be done.

I am not 100% confident that the markings were wrong.
I am 100% confident that I swapped the pipes to the new filter as they were on the old filter

    So, either .....
the markings on the old filter were wrong or
the markings on the new filter were wrong or
the markings on both filters were right but the old ones allowed enough fuel through via the wrong flow path.

    Pictures as promised.

    Notes on the trip :

It was truly scenic and beautiful.
I was too chicken to try that rock climbing obstacle
A Hilux's diff and sideshaft is a lot stronger than I thought. The way the guys drove up there made me shudder!
The landy is king at rock climbing.
What you drive doesn't make the person. As long as you enjoy the drive in a beautiful country.

What are the chances of an incorrectly fitted fuel filter being the cause of the original engines demise?

If the filter was fitted incorrectly causing a suboptimal fuel flow, surely this results in a lean mixture. Or similar.

Maybe it was the original root cause.

I doubt it. The other cylinders and rest of engine looked new. Lack of fuel will cause driveability issues long before it gets to a state of doing damage.

Looks awesome. Respect your decision not to try break the Treg on those obstacles. That is much wiser than being a hero for the moment.

Also had a great day out with the Treg, no serious off-roading, just the stuff at Rhino & Lion Park. As the Audi is still with Audi, also not in the mood of risking any damage to the Treg.

Was just great family time, and my daughter discovered we have a tree-house with us wherever we go with the Treg.

    serviced the car tonight.

I went through the whole effort of taking the tappet cover off and sacrificing a liter of clean oil to flush all the dirty oil away in the valve train area. I also poured some clean oil in the filter housing to flush the dirty oil out as well. Then after the old oil has drained, I poured about 500ml of clean oil in the filler cap and let that drain as well.

I'm sure I got most of the dirty oil out.

I will now check how quickly the oil goes black.

So far after 5 minutes of idling the dipstick still show perfectly new golden oil.

I used Shell Helix HX7 AV oil. Shell charged me R84/liter. Goldwagen wanted R185/liter

It is a 5w-30 oil as opposed to the Fuchs I used before that was a 5w-40. I will report back after my next drive I can notice a difference in the engine, oil temp and economy.

Unfortunately I resolved the issue and the touareg is running well now.

I couldn't keep up with the landy and hilux's offroad but on the way home on the open road, where I spend most of my time, they couldn't keep up with me

Maybe Dyllan's Lexus V8 would be able to keep up with me but he had a late start as he had to stop in King.... I presume for fuel

A small video to show the overtaking power of a small 2.5 Diesel engine when it's running nicely.
