    An intelligent man should.

I'm not, I don't believe in or understand scientific research or testing.

I prefer to rely on hearsay and anecdotal evidence.

If the guys that designed the Space Shuttle had gone to Italtile they wouldn't have lost the Columbus. I hear they have the best tiles.

Happiness.... For what its worth I did the flow test and got just under a litre on a warm engine, bear in mind that mine has been remapped, not sure how that will affect this test.
    Hope you are sorted

We spot the issues earlier and tend to take issues head on instead of dropping it at the dealer and not telling everybody online about it.

    Thanks Rowan. Much appreciated.

I now understand why the filter costs R700.

VF - fuel supply from tank
VM - goes to tandem pump
RT - goes to fuel cooler (heat exchanger)
RF - from the fuel rail (pipe has fuel temp sensor in it)

The filter has a tiny thermostat in it.

I don't at what temperature it activates but when the fuel is relatively cold the RF infeed mixes with the VF feed to get the fuel up to temperature and eliminate gelling in cold weather. Once the fuel is warm enough the mixing is bypassed and returned straight through the filter bypass back to the tank.

Very clever, but wasted on us in our climate.

Where the markings indeed wrong, or operator error?

On the V6 TDI you just replace the filter element, not the whole cartridge with the workings. Golwagen one is around R 250.00. Wonder why they did it this way on the R5 & V10.

Waiting to hear how the Treg went today...

64km to dad. Dinner. 64km back.

10.5l/100km. I was pushing it hard some stretches to try and induce a misfire.

    Not a single misfire.

I am so relived. Thanks for all the support guys. If I had to do this on my own without venting here I would have lost it a long time ago.

I even found myself getting a settlement quote from wesbank and browsing autotrader for a gen2 pajero yesterday.

    Now to bed.

Jy het hom nou uitgesort, nou wil jy weer n ander ou se problem weer uitsort. (jy gaan nooit wen, hou jy die kar, gaan ons se verkoop, as jy wil verkoop, gaan ons se jy koop ander man se probleme).

Eindlik geniet ons al jou probleemsoek episodes (nie die feit dat jy probleme het, maar op die sinvolle manier hoe jy dit oplos).

Marius would you care to try and put together a logical sequence of what actually happened since you stopped in Caledon?

Was it a blocked filter right from the start and never a damaged injector. And what happened to the second filter, I can hardly believe the fittings were marked incorrectly.

Filled up at BP Oakvlei in Bellville at about 5am
85km later car started misfiring under load
Stopped and scanned with computer - VCDS says electrical malfunction on injector 3
Clear codes, drive further. Still a misfire under load. Scan again. Same story.
    Limp to Caledon
Get in touch with TuffStuff 24 hour line
The call center that was outsourced didn't understand the policy properly
Their communication to me contradicted a conversation I had with Raymond a couple weeks prior
Get in touch with Raymond that sorts everything out.
    Flatbed arrives at 11am
Go to Reenen's farm for lunch
Back to Caledon at 3pm to fetch rental car
3:30pm set off from Caledon in rental Hyundai accent
next morning 00:30 arrive at home
00:35 touareg arrives at home on flatbed

over the next few days these were the events

Took car to VW to try and get injector replaced with one of my spare ones under warranty
VW East London has political issues with SA Warranties - pending investigation
    Take car back home
    Swap injector
Test drive. Still missing when hot. No codes
Take fuel sample. Smells of paraffin
Drain tank, put fresh fuel and swap filter
Still misfiring under load when hot
Swap out wiring harnass with old harnass and crimp connections tight.
Still misfiring under load when hot
Change filter again making sure of connections
    Car is now good.

    So my conclusion

I believe the injector died due to bad fuel.
I believe the first filter change was either a dud filter or blocked up again or the connections was wrong - I marked the pipes.
Perhaps the previous two filters were also installed wrong as I always marked the pipes and reinstalled when fitting. Perhaps the previous two filters allowed enough fuel via the filter thermostat to keep car running.

    What I learned.

    - Fill up at large and busy fuel stations that looks modern and newly built to ensure good fresh fuel.
    - Never trust the previous guy to do a good job. Double check. Never assume.

Nothing can be said for sure. I'm just glad it's all over now and I have the car running again.
