    Check basics first!

I had a smoky idle for a while now after the rebuild.

I made peace with the fact that I have to recon the turbo as PCV blank made no difference. So as a final resort I decided to blank the EGR with a plate and fit a new air filter.

As far as I can tell, the smoky idle is gone.

    Thank goodness!

During this big project and the vehicle being off the road.
Do you still have to pay vehicle registration or is there a form you filled in stating the vehicle was not road worthy?

Doubt that is even worth the hassle. Plus then it would not be insured, which could become a problem if your workshop burns down or something.

The vehicle was licensed through the whole process. I considered changing my insurance to 3rd party, fire & theft. Thank goodness I didn't as the chainblock fell on the roof/windscreen for which TuffStuff paid 100%.

So yes, accidents happen in the workshop.Make sure your car is licensed and insured while it's being worked on.

PS : It's currently in the workshop again. I am replacing turbo seals.

Slowly becoming an entire Treg rebuild.

How did you notice they are damaged? What are the symptoms? What would cause failure?

I guess the mileage of yours needs to be considered at all times.

    It was smoking at idle.

I eliminated PCV, EGR, Injectors etc.

I pulled the downpipe and could see wetness so I knew the exhaust impeller seal was shot.

The fact that it only did it at idle gave an indication as the seal tends to close at higher rpm due to the oil pressure and whatever leaks past gets burned instead of smoking.

I am 99% confident it's the turbo seal so after this exercise I will know for sure.

Quick question, do the rear brake pads have wear sensors like the fronts?

I changed my front discs and pads last year this time, and I just got the wear indicator on the dash yesterday. Surely it can't be the fronts again as I have only done about 25,000km on these front ones

Yes, all four wheels have the sensors.

Devon yours also smokes a lot during idle. Might also be what Marius is busy with.

    Thnx for the answers Marius.

The smoking actually got quite bad about a month ago... Sitting in traffic I would have clouds of white smoke coming past me...

    But...

Changed the fuel filter, and after about 50km the smoke stopped completely...

My fuel filter was changed just before the engine build so cant be that.

Turbo is in. At first glance it looks like it's sorted but will have to take a longish test drive to confirm.

Dishwasher is brilliant for washing car parts, quick wash in the parts washer to get the worst of the gunk out followed by a hot cycle in the dishwasher and alls good!

Tip: remember to push the dishwasher through another empty wash cycle as you are done to get the oil smell out of it.
