He assured me it's either phillips or osram. They dont do chinese knock offs.

My wish list would have been nice if there was a way to replace those with normal halogens and also a plug in replacement hard drive or usb option instead of the 6 disc shuttle.

    Maruis,
Once you have had Xenons, you can't go back to halogenHalogens are cheaper to replace but they die as well.Good lights are a safety issue, particularly in our part of the world
Yes the dealers are ripping us,but with clever shopping the Xenons are available at a fair price.

My pajero with it's normal halogens and hella spots gave way more light than the treg's xenons.

The xenons on mine are the driving lights on the treg and it uses H7 halogens for the brights.

With the treg running good now I managed to finish off the work on dad's gen1. Wiper, lights and window wiring job. Plus a service.

After all is said and done I had a mission finding fault as to why it started up in limp mode. With a 3.2 Di-D transplant it makes troubleshooting very difficult.

Finally found the issue and she is running great now.

So tonight Im having a beer and braai to celebrate the two beasts being back to former glory.

Hi manne, alternator probleem, uitgesort. Treg start maar is baie sporatic, loop en ruk, sny uit, wys engin malfunction. Engin op idle, klink bietjie hard, Ook n hoe vibrasie wat ek op kar voel met idle tot op die dash.
Kar nou by auto electrician, vir ecu, etc. Nie weer by B...h nie
Sal nou maar sien wat daar gebeur.

Do you have access to someone with vagcom to check codes and inj quantity on the cylinders?

Maybe it just needs to have the codes cleared which clears all settings and the engine relearns itself.

don't want to scare us do you? The treg is an expensive car, and everyone on this forum that drives them love them.

Hopefully it's as simple as a code clear. If they don't crack it, Tim will!

    try the VWclub vagcom locator

    http://www.vwclub.co.za/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=150131

Remember that there may be nothing wrong with the car other than the ecu that may need resetting. A traditional auto electrician will do more damage than fixing if he doesn't understand the car. It's not the standard wiring setup like in the old days.

I have a VAGCOM, and in JNB area, prepared to help, but I'm afraid my knowledge will not be sufficient to diagnose this. It's not as simple as plug in VAGCOM, reset and everything is fine. The underlying problem will still be there.

I agree but remember clearing the codes and seeing what comes back will give a much better indication of where to start looking.

Also go to 01- Engine and click on Measuring blocks.

Then monitor fields 013 and 014 - that is the injection adjustment for the injectors. (Car up to temp and A/C off - all other electrics off as well)

They should all be less than 0.5.

i agree, i think it would be best to reset back to factory settings and check every setting where possible.
i reckon the number 5 cylinder story will show its head again.not being negative but the fault has not been determined and i still reckon its electronic

I had an interesting "event" two days ago. Drove about 5 km to home. Roads fairly empty and drove at 60kmph. Outside air temp was about 21 so cool evening. When I got home and switched off the fan kept running. First time this has happened since new even though I have driven in far higher temps - over 30 deg. When I got out of the car it smelt very hot. I got in again and started - no warnings, nothing out of ordinary.

    Strange. No repeat since then.

slow speed means hot engine bay.

Engine bay temp is high so the fans run on a bit.

I decided that today I want to find out more about the failed engine so I quickly took out piston number 5.

Gudgeon pin, big ends, small ends and crank journal is basically new. I can still see and feel the machining marks on the bearing surfaces.

Piston shows no sign of overheating or cracking.

I'll put my unexperienced diagnosis on a dud ring or that the engine ingested something.

Other than the obviously failed rings and bore, the rest of the contact surfaces look NEW!

Interesting, so the common theory that incorrect oil wears the big ends and allows the piston to "float" damaging the bore is not relevant in this case? It definately appears that the piston crown has suffered mechanical damage, as you say possibly a broken ring or ring landing
A number of overseas forums have claimed that overfueling causes a number 5 failure through overheating and lifting of the plasma coating.Again in this case it doesn't seem evident......I think she bit something she couldn't chew.
