The Genuine VW OIL 5W-40 are approved under VW standards 502, 506.01 and 505.01.
This is the oil what you should use with the R5/V10 TDi engines.

Have a look here for product:

Many VW dealers will sell you the 507 spec oil or even use it for service because of their own ignorance.

Would you guys be interested in a live feed on youtube when I drop the engine in?

    Just out of interest

I just had a look at the courier slip for my new engine.

Engine with ancillaries, manifolds, turbo, some pipes, engine mounting brackets, full of oil, on a tyre, tied down with wires and a pallet it came in at 223kg. I reckon block and head bare to be about 150kg.

got the tandem pump today with gasket and picked up some coolant and power steering fluid.

old tandem pump off and surface cleaned

    new tandem pump installed

    engine going in

engine in sitting on it's mounts and 2 bellhousing bolts installed. Also got one flexplate bolt installed (85NM) - I am able to turn the engine by levering with a large flat screwdriver against the ring gear teeth so no need to remove the front crank seal (which gets damaged in the removal process and costs R890 from VW)

Not bad for 2 quick hours after work, even if I must say so myself

Nice progress. After taking the old tandem pump off, would you say it was necessary to replace/could you see any issues with the old one on closer inspection?Marius, I'm not exactly sure what is meant, but read on the German forums, that special care must be taken in aligning the engine with the transmission 100%, apparently very sensitive to slight deviations. Take care when joining the two.

This is due to the torque converter having a double step when installing.

To make sure I was fine I used a vernier to check extrusion of flexplate on engine and recess of torque converter in bellhousing. This was within spec according to VW.

After triple checking I dropped the engine in, aligned it and threaded 2 bolts by hand until bellhousing and engine was flush.

I then reached in through the starter hole and I could still turn the torque converter with one finger indicating that it hasn't been pinched or squashed.

ElsaWin is a life saver with this build

    Nice going!

The "thermal insulation" is really for sound damping purposes. Europe has stringent noise passby requirements and diesels give off a lot of noise from the crankcases and sumps.
