    Hier is die nuutste

Engine wiring harnass out of the way

A/C pump removed and moved aside without having to evacuate the system

NOTE TO SELF : get a replacement rubber coupling.

Disconnected hoses sealed off with bank bags - I like to think of them as the money bags I'm saving by doing this DIY

    The current state of view

starter removed with access to flexplate bolts - not seen at the moment as the car is at TDC

    driver's side with starter removed

    clearance - more than enough

My DIY tool for turning the crank - much cheaper than $200+shipping

works beautifully and fits snug as well so will adapt a strongarm or something to fashion a locking tool as well.

starter out. weird that VW used 18mm bolts for it.....

the starter is also a lot smaller than I expected. The pajero 3.2 starter is nearly double the size.

Bendix looks good as new. Not bad for 250'000kms of use

    Everything is now disconnected.

    left to do

    support the gearbox
get the chain host ready and hooked up
    undo flexplate bolts
    undo bellhousing bolts
    undo engine mountings

    and out she comes.
VW loves funny special tools ! This looks similar to the special tool required for top shock nut of the Golf I / Sh*ttyGolf. I came across one I made when I had my KWIK-FIT franchise, earlier this week - looks very similar to your design.

Good Luck with the next step - I hope it's less damage than you expect.

    bore is toast

this going to be expensive and may come to a screeching halt as I doubt I have the funds to cover this

Looks like a ring broke, chipped the piston, made it's way into the combustion chamber and got smashed to bits, taking the bore with it.

So a complete dismantle to find all pieces will be necessary.

Let's hope no major damage has been done to bearings, oil pump etc.

Head will need to work to verify the valve seats are OK etc.

If I think about the machining, injector testing, parts etc. It may be better to save up for a remtech engine.

Eish, this is bad news! I think we were all hoping it would be something small.

the more I think about the risk of reconditioning, parts, machining, injector testing etc. the more it makes sense to get the remtech engine at R60k.

I'm going to speak to the bank tomorrow to see if I can manage an affordable repayment on a loan. Gonna be tight but I think it's the best option so far.

Sjo, this doesn't look good. Was really hoping that it was something small. Could you please show us pictures of the other bores so us dummies can have more perspective?

Sorry Marius, was hoping this would not be the case. Eish. Would you entertain getting an engine from Germany? I have a mate who brings in machinery in shipping containers monthly from there, he could perhaps work a good shipping cost. He is on holiday now, but could see in the new year.

What is your theory on a ring just breaking? What would be the causes? Could it not be the crankshaft main bearing tolerance exceeding which causes the piston to 'wobble' ultimately fracturing the ring and destroying the bore. Thats what the German forums report, - short of the broken piston rings.

the piston is very loose in the bore but if that's the cause or effect is another question altogether.

My boss has a contact in VW racing who will give an opinion tomorrow.

But I think a remtech engine is in the near future for me.

Will remtech not give you a rebate on the old engine, or does the 60k include you giving them your old engine?

Bad luck Marius - I feel for you. My Audi A4 2.7 V6 diesel broke a main bearing last year with 60k km on the clock. The replacement engine + labour was R160k. It took a while before I could think about it without getting angry...
