I'm sure you'll get the engine. As long as you don't hand over any money in advance, you have nothing to lose.

I would still take the top off the current engine to see if the bore is really damaged or if it is only a broken ring. If the latter, it must be better & cheaper to fix the existing engine than to install another used engine of unknown heritage.

I won't hand over a penny until I am standing next to the engine, so maybe this still comes through but I am skeptic at this moment.
Can't recall from reading back to the beginning, but am assuming police clearance/check on the replacement engine is going to happen prior to forking over the money?

Surely you have a warranty with the guys you bought the car from.2 months is a short period and you should be covered for 6 months according to the CPA or does this not apply?

urgggh. My blood pressure is through the roof. I actually got a headache today.

Phoned him this morning. He answered and said his driver is picking up the engine at 8:30 and he'll phone me to confirm address etc.

9am : still no phonecall. After about 20 tries I eventually get through to him and he says I must just wait he is going to speak to the driver.... click..... phone goes dead.

Since then I have tried in excess of 30 times and he doesn't answer.

I also asked the person who sold me the car to take a drive past there as he is close to the area. He spotted workshops but none with the name on the invoice.

If this carries on, I'm going to get the car back to me, take it out and send it to Gary at Hi-Way motors who says he is willing to look at the engine and possibly rebuild if he can and if needed. He reckons it may be a valve guide that's worn and sticking bleeding compression - he reckons VW engines are known for that and has seen it many times before.

In the meantime I have about 10 people actively trying to find me an engine.

If only my lotto ticket would pay out R60k I would get a recon from remtech and diy the swap.

    Hi Marius,

I really hope that this matter will get resolved in a positive way.

I believe there are risks involved by transacting with unknown individuals.
There are many people who gets scammed daily e.g. a friend of mine just recently lost R35k by selling goods and all references actually checked out 100% legit.
Also by using Gumtree is an easy way to lure people by scam artists.

Let’s all hope that things will checkout well at the end…

I think you should regardless just check out the current damage on the engine.
Currently we all are just speculating what may be wrong and only expecting the worst.
For all you know it can be something simple like valve seals or failed piston rings.
Did you check for any signs of Toyota faeces in the engine bay?

Engine transplants and mods are not uncommon.
Did you think of trying to get a more wide available engine unit?
3.0TDi engines are used in wide range of applications from sedans to high end SUV’s for both VW and Audi.
Surely to source one of these should be allot less effort.

Lexus V8’s are cheap and a popular choice for engine replacements.
I guy I know replaced the failed diesel engine of a BMW 530d with one of these and it works and sounds great.
It took some effort to sort out the BMW integrated electronics, but this proves anything is possible.
BMW charged his client R150k for engine replacement and he did this conversion for R40k.

    Good luck mate….
    Cheers,
    Dave

Changing to a different engine is next to impossible due to all the electronics.

Would agree, cost would exceed benefit. V6 TDI and r5 even have different propshafts, longer vs shorter. V6 TDI is common rail. Easiest conversion would probably be to a v10, but that defeats the point.

Give up on the scamming guy, have the engine opened, and perhaps a more pleasant result awaits.

On the upside we might still get a R5 build thread. You get this right, you could open a business, - many high mileage R5s in circulation now.

Also : a v10 engine will be just as scarce. That can only be done from below. Extra components in terms of piping cooling etc is too expensive. On top of that the planetary gears in the box is halved for the R5

I think it's not, with the TReg the ECU works interdependently from the vehicle's central electronic control system.
This meaning a separate unit is used to control the engine, unlike other vehicles where it all is integrated into one computer.

I've seen more V6 TDi T1's around here than R5's and surely mechanically both vehicles will be the exact same except the for the engines.

Also I've seen many R5 T2's as well.
So platform sharing must be possible...

Dave, think aircon compressor, fuel system, turbo, prop-shaft, gearbox, diesel cooler, atf cooler... possible yes, but you could buy a new one sooner.

I think I can handle an engine swap but to change to a different engine is beyond my skill.

I don't have any fabricating skills.

I am trying today for the last time to get a hold of an engine. Failing that I am flatbedding the car to my place and start pulling the engine the weekend.

I will then consider taking the head off myself to see what I find.

The engine will then be sent to Hiway motors for repair or reconditioning.

If the engine can't be fixed the car will stand until I find an engine or until I save up R60k for a recon from Remtech.

Marius, also follow-up on this link which was posted. Seems these guys do plasma coating here in SA. Could be useful, even if just for an opinion.

Pitty you are not in JNB area, I'd be keen to help you with this project as much as SWAMBO would allow.

    Hurray for R5 Build Thread!

I understand, a job like this can be hideous when you need to put in a different engine, especially if you need to start manufacturing your own custom parts.
Anyways, it was just an extra thought from my side...

DIY fix isn't impossible if you look here:
    http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f9...rex-73289.html

The guy did this job in his own home garage.
This task I would never attempt with my limited skills and tools.
