Slightly higher fuel consumption on the highway.

Never felt it, never heard it, never thought about it. It was like it wasn't there at all.

Definitely an easy way to take a full size spare if the interior packing space is needed.

I have been having poor reception since I installed the double din. Even though I did the aerial mod, which helped, it was really poor.

So I bit the bullet finally and drilled a hoke in the roof to fit a powered aerial from a mk3 golf and ran a new aerial wire through the roof to the back of the radio.

    My reception is now outstanding!

    Neat.

Is that not going to interfere with your roofrack/sparewheel combo now?

No. I spaced it exactly so it doesnt interfere with the rear door or roof racks or sparewheel.

I absolutely hate having to drill holes in my cars.

I use thru the glass capacitive couple antenna. It uses a super self adhesive tape that will glue an elephant to a marshmallow.

    Nice job there Marius.

The nice thing about going the extra mile - the road is never congested.

I also hate drilling the car but this is a better option for the touareg. I tried that stick on one with the double din install but the reception was poor. I suspect its the thick windows and glazing of the touareg or perhaps the funny alloys they use.

For me the aerial on the roof looks standard so I bit the bullet.

PS : the roof aluminium alloy is helluva thick!

The other option is to fit the unit inside the side mirrors. Like the Amaroks etc....

Running an aerial through the doors the mirrors sounds like an impossible job to me as an after thought.

The factory radio communicates with a diversity box and amplifier switching between different aerials located in the right, left & middle rear window.

Try as I may I couldn't find a way to get those aerials working with an aftermarket radio.

In the end I ran a normal run of the mill aerial cable all the way to the back with a simple powered aerial I bought from Midas.

I have a little causeway bridge on the gravel road about 2km from my house and with the previous aerial mod (with Fakra adapters and all sorts) the reception would be breaking up, where the factory radio was clear.

Now with the aftermarket aerial, I have perfect signal.

Murphy's law : The fakra adapters was more effort and more expensive than running the normal aerial cable with normal aerial to the roof.

How well do you think a cheap whip antenna concealed under the left front fender would work? The fender is plastic as you know. I'm sure not as well as your solution, but I will not drill a hole in my roof. That said, you did a good job of it. Should be better than the current diversity mess I have.

Well, the nice thing about an antenna under the front fender is that it is reversible.

The bad thing is you have to find a place through the firewall.

Any ideas where I should look first?

Problem is that the rain tray is so deep you cant use the brake pedal rubber grommet like most cars.

Today, exactly three years ago, I bought the beetle.

It's been a roller coaster but I have learned a lot. Thanks to everybody for the comments and input so far.

    It's been great.......and it's not over yet!
