So that's why they fall over!

Marius - I am impressed that you could fit the battery under the spare. It looks really neat.

I use the compressor fairly regularly to inflate the tyres after some gravel driving. If it was not for that, I would have been much more reluctant to deflate them to avoid the trouble of looking for a garage, or using boot space for the portable compressor.
I will let you know if it ever fails, but I suspect the VW engineers did a proper design job, as usual.

I will try to snap a pic next time I'm in town of the two parked together. Can't be too hard. There are loads of them around.

This is the closest comparison Picture I have in my collection

You guys have now given the excuse I always wanted.. Having owed both cars previously, I honestly thought (as Marius), the Fortuner was the larger of the two...consulting with google however (and I do not take any responsibility for the figures below), it would seem though the Touareg is in fact in the bigger one....

Length (bumper tip to bumper tip): Fortuner - 4,695; Touareg - 4,754
    Wheelbase length: Fortuner - 2,750; Touareg - 2,855
    Width: Fortuner - 1,840; Touareg - 1,928
    Weel track front: Fortuner - 1,540; Touareg - 1,645
    Weel track rear: Fortuner - 1,540; Touareg - 1,657
    Roof line height: Fortuner - 1,850; Touareg - 1,778

The figures might suggest it but I urge to pack a touareg like a fortuner.

add a tow bar and you can add 50mm or more to the length but that doesn't add packing space.

Anyway. I will get a picture soon and revert back

Marius, I fully agree with you - I found this to be true as said, I owned both cars at a stage, the Fortuner has loads more packing space inside compared to the Touareg, and there are various reasons for this - from my experience it all starts at the front with the door lengths. The Fortuner has shorter doors compared to the Touareg as well as the rear doors thus carrying through packing space to the rear. The rear packing space of the Touareg compared to the Fortuner is tiny and if you remove the 3rd row seats in the Fortuner, this just amps up on additional packing space. Between the two though, the Touareg, imho, is a far superior car and had it the offering of the 3rd row seats, I would still be driving it.

Why are we comparing the 5 seater Touareg to the 7 seater Fortuner

That said, a Freelander 2 is a lot smaller than a Touareg, also seats 5 comfortable and that has a full size spare under the boot floor.

It will also whip it off road

Nice setup there is the boot Marius, did you check if the normal wheel will fit above the battery if you get a puncture and had to use the spare.

The spare fits fine over the battery.

I bet you my car the touareg will go where a freelander cant.

Bad news though. The main battery is on its way out after 10 years of service.

My dual battery solenoid is the tub as well so I have to get the same size one.

I do remember that battery doctor promised me a free refurb so I might go for that before the battery is too far gone.

I have seen his work on our bulldozer batteries that were finished in my mind.

Shall we go via Robbie's pass to the Namib dunes?

Does the FL have low range? Diff locks?

No need to complicate things, just bring it to Atlantis Dunes.

And no, no low range, no diff locks.

It has a full size spare though

Don't think Marius's very valuable and long time thread should be for this discussion.
