    ______________________________________

2 months ago i traded my pajero in on a touareg.

Last week back from jhb it developed a misfire on cylinder 5.

It also started using oil pretty badly - i suspect via ccv as crank vapours are pretty heavy.

Doing a bit of research i suspect a cam lobe wear (possibly a lifter failure accompanying) so i pulled the tappet cover and the cam and lifters on brief inspection looks ok.

Next is a possible injector seal failure (the copper ones that seal the injector to the head) hence why i didnt do a compression check.

Vw manual states an easy diy but im missing some vw specific tools and the car has a warranty and its fairly newly bought (albeit secondhand)

So, i have booked it into vw last week (they will open her up tomorrow) and i gave them instructions. i dont want to leave diagnosis in their hands or leave the issue with the dealer that sold me the car as they will start on a replace everything till we find the issue basis and then probably not cover it.

    To pull injectors
Call me when they are out so i can have them ultra sonic bathed (just the bottom part with the laser cut intake holes that are tiny)
I will inspect the cam and lifters properly with them
After i give the injectors back they must reinstall with new orings, new rocker bolts, new unit injector adjustments bolts) and copper heat shield washers and swap injector 5 and 1 to see if misfire follows injector
If after assemble the misfire continues on cylinder 5 its probably a faulty piston or rings
If misfire follows injector then that injector is dud

Question to you guys. Regardless of diagnosis what is my position with the dealer that sold me the car? (i dont mind if my experiment with vw comes out of my pocket but failing that what are my options?)

Sorry to hear about the troubles.

How many km's did you add since buying the car? If not too many, you should approach the dealer to rectify depending on the diagnosis and if the problem/cause can be proven to be a pre-existing defect. The dealer will argue wear and tear if you put unreasonably high additional mileage on the car since the purchase.

Then again, I don't know much about the consumer protection act. Between that and the warranty, you should probably be OK.

    Marius,

I think you need to get proper advice on this.

My personal take though. Have you engaged with the dealer / warranty / guarantee provider yet? I would do that BEFORE you open the motor, and let the opening instruction come from them.

    +1

If you initiate work without their knowledge/approval, they may just refute liability. Get them in the loop.

Sorry to hear about your woes, make it the warrantee's problem!

I have heard this story before, excessive cam play on I think cylinder 2 after injector failure, let me phone a mate who had a similar problem on a T5 tomorrow! Pardon my ignorance but AXE motors have very specific quirks and if you've had one for 5 years you act like an expert! While you're at it carefully inspect the exhaust manifold! IMHO thats where all the shite starts!
    What a life!

Warranty is pretty worthless. Found out too late. It covers very little and the stuff it does cover is linked to a price which will just be good enough for a tazz.

An injector service or cam replacement or lifter replacement i can live with. What worries me is that a piston could be cracked or melted. I dont want to foot the bill for a replacement engine which starts at R60k reconditioned.

I think this was a fault that has been gradually getting worse. I remember fluffy test drove it for me and reported a vibration at low revs which i shrugged off thinking it will clear with a dose of injector cleaner and a spirited drive. It did clear off for a while but it came back every so often.

Well..... Today they are basically servicing the injectors at my cost and after today i should have a better indication of whats wrong and if its a long time coming failure ill get the previous owner, dealer, insurance and warranty all into the same pot around a table.

Its a standard vw procedure done by vw. They cant hold it against me. Then they may as well through it against me if i dont let them know about a vw service.

My logic and gut tells me its a faulty injector and/or seal or gummy rings.

My pessimistic murphy luck devil in my ear says its a melted or cracked piston.

To make sure it is not another DVR type issue here, get an inspection camera. Something you can stick down through that injector hole. Just so you can see if there is scarring on the bore, or even a melted piston.

If you can, pull the sump and make sure there is no sludge.

That is an expensive motor, so if it was me, I would pull the head and the sump. Make sure all the injectors are good.

You never know what the previous clowns used for diesel or oil.

I doubt there is sludge. I serviced it twice in the last 6000km i have owned it.

After the injectors are done I will do a compression test before making any decisions on what to do next.

The VW workshop foreman tells me this is the first 2.5 engine he's had in their workshop.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, really sucks! Hope it's only an injector! The excess oil consumption is a worry, as the injector alone won't do that though. Eish, eish, eish!

    Holding thumbs for you.

If the injector's copper seal is gone it can suck oil back into the combustion chamber and blow it back out at force which vaporizes it and the ccv pulls it through the engine.

I only though of this theory after nursing the car back home from durban. Then tuffstuff came to the party and arranged a flatbed to take it to vw.

    Thanks TS!

    Hi Marius

Sorry to hear about this issue, never nice to have this on a newly bought vehicle...

I won't stick my neck out here, as I'm more a petrol fan. But, I would like to find out what oil was put into the R5 in these last 2 services? Brand and grade would be good to know.

    Good luck!

Thanks Marius, As I said, I'm no pro here but, If I may...

Sir Henris; would this at ALL have any resemblance to what happened to DVR (jnr)? (Referring to the info above)

Oil grade and all that jazz?

My apologies, a simple google-machine search revealed that these oil are of excellent quality. I'm sure there is no need for alarm on this aspect.

All the best Marius, hope it gets sorted after the injector wash/swop!

unless the previous service was done by an idiot.

The car has a full service history with VW for most of it's life and both oils I used are made to the same synthetic standard.

no apology needed. You didn't say anything wrong. All opinions are welcome, hence why we post on the forum.

im trying to figure out now when they are working on it so I can go there and keep an eye.

I hope you are correct on this.

The oils you have used are of-course 100%. Think this can be traced back to the slight judder which was apparent from day one of ownership. Did you in any way mention the judder to the dealer?

I'm going to search the German VW and Treg forums for you and see if I can find anything relevant.

my search the last week has revealed in order of likelihood

    injector seals
    dud injector
    worn cam lobes and/or lifters
    gummy rings
    failed piston

I have just sent an email to the dealer who sold me the car, plus the VW garage that took the VW in and made it available as a sale (dealer acted as middleman in a sense), the ombudsman & the warranty company. I copied all in on the same mail so let's see what response I get.

Ok, lots of info on the R5 on the German forums. Failure of one cylinder in many threads, nearly always associated with the incorrect oil used in the vehicles history somewhere (can be a long time ago). 507 being the most common mistake made.

The incorrect oil causes the crankshaft bearings to develop excessive tolerance, this leads to irregular sliding motion of the piston/s, whereby the cylinders plasma coating slowly seperates from the cylinder wall with an eventual crack forming in the piston.

    http://www.touareg-freunde.de/archiv...p/t-12850.html

I do hope it's not the above, and impossible to conclude without compression tests etc...
