Default Prado 3,0 Diesel vs 4,0l V6 Petrol consumption

Hi Guys, I've been looking through some old threads on fuel consumption and seem to get the following information for the above mentioned Prados:

    - 3,0 Diesel - 8,0 - 8,5 km per liter on open road no towing
    - 4,0 Petrol - 7,0 - 7,5 cruising open road at 120km per hour

I would appreciate if the above could be confirmed.

I,m looking at a second hand Prado, got R200k to spend and was looking at the 3,0 KZTE diesel but have been warned about this engine being underpowered (not so much of a concern to me) but the main issue is the fact that I will be buying an oldish diesel engine ( most likely 150 000 - 180 000km on the clock) and I've heard this is tricky.

It seems that the petrol version will eliminate the engine reliability concerns of the KZTE diesel when buying second hand and the kind of mileage I can afford.

    Many thanks
    Zane

I don't drive either but go out and buy the latest SA4x4. There is a full readers fuel consumption review in it. My experience of the V6 petrol (I drive a V6 Pajero) is that I really wish I could get 7.0 to 7.5 Km/l @ 120Km/h cruising. I don't believe this for a second.

Just done about 1600 km in 4.0 Prado (Jhb to Berg to Coast and back), mainly highway but with some dirt roads and general driving around, ave consumption was 13.8 l/100 km.

That's not bad, you should be smiling. I average at least 1 to 2 l/100 more.

Zane I am driving my 2007 V6 model now for nearly 4 years. I get on average 7.5 @ 120km/h not towing.
When I tow my Conqueror Conquest, heavily loaded (Prado too) I get between 5 and 6.
The worst I ever got towing the same rig offroad, slow speed with sand, rocks and tough terrain I got 4.6

Zane I had a Prado 120 diesel manual about 4 years ago and if I can remember correctly the consumption was closer to 7.5 km/l at 120km/h. Yes the KZTE is a bit lazy compared to the latest diesel engines, but if you take it up to 120 and put the speedo cruise on it maintains that speed.

Taking the KZTE engine reliability, small fuel consumption difference and difference in service interval into account the best long term bet is to buy the V6.

I bought my '02 Prado a year back with 340k on the clock, and it is still going srtong at 351k! Service record should be your most important criteria if choosing the diesel I think. If the Kzte was treated well it will treat you well back for many more kilo's. When driving to Kosi bay in Dec I acheived 8.38 km/litre with 200cm high rooftop Campcover bags on the roofrack at 100-110km/h on the open road. We filled up at Piet Retief and drove to Manguzi where I refilled and I only acheived 6.7 km/l. On the way back I drove cautiously at 90km/h because of a bit of sidewall damage to one tyre and I was quite surprised to get 10.15 km/l. Driving around Bhanganek and Kosi mouth in thick sand and doing 330km's including going to Ponta da Ouro (also thick sand) I got 7.5 km/l which I think is quite reasonable but I must mention that engaging 4x4 was never needed. Tyres was 1.5 bar. This was just my rescent experience with a 3.0l diesel. My 2CW.

    I have the 4.0.
I try and drive economical but always about 3-5 km/h above the speed limit according to the GPS.
Going down to Dbn this holiday I got 11.9 L/110km (best previous trip was 11.6L/100km)
Coming home was 12.6 L/100 km.
My average consumption mixed driving is around 13.3 - 13.5L/100 km. Only city driving sees this go up to about 15.5 L/100km average.
All this is just academic...the joy when overtaking is worth the premium.
When buying I estimated 14.5 L/100km so naturally I am extremely impressed.
